Outdoor Summer Photoshoot Style Guide

When it comes to your family photography session, what you wear can make all the difference to the final images. The good news is, it doesn’t have to be complicated. My outdoor sessions are all about capturing the moment, so I recommend choosing soft, comfortable clothing that complements both your setting and each other.

Here’s a quick style guide to help you feel relaxed and look your best for your shoot:

Keep it simple, soft, and breathable

Summer shoots are (usually) warm and sunny, so light cottons, linens and other breathable fabrics are perfect. They flow beautifully in movement, keep you cool, and photograph softly against outdoor backdrops.

Choose clean, natural colours

Soft, neutral colours always work best in the natural light and places I shoot in. These tones allow the focus to stay on you and won’t clash with the outdoors.

My favourite colours for outdoor sessions include:

  • Neutrals: Ivory, cream, soft white, oatmeal, light tan
  • Pastels: Dusty rose, sage green, powder blue
  • Earthy tones: Terracotta, rust, olive
  • Denim: Light or medium wash jeans or dresses

These colours all complement each other well, perfect for coordinating as a family without feeling too “matchy.”

What to avoid

Some colours and patterns don’t work as well on camera, especially outdoors. I recommend steering clear of:

  • Neon or very bright colours (they cast unnatural tones on skin)
  • Black or bold red (they tend to dominate in natural light)
  • Large logos, text, or busy patterns (they distract from the connection and emotion in the photo)

A few extra tips

Shoes: Something neutral, boots, sandals, stay comfortable but nothing too distracting.

Layers: Light jackets or cardigans can add texture if it’s breezy.

Comfort is key: Make sure kids feel free to move and play – those natural moments are often the ones you’ll love most.

Remember, this session is about capturing your family just as you are, dressing in a way that feels relaxed, coordinated, and comfortable will help bring out those genuine smiles and moments. If you’re ever unsure, feel free to send over outfit ideas before the day, I’m always happy to help!
